Whole food supplements are gaining in popularity in our society and it is not too difficult to see why. They have many advantages to your health and people are beginning to realize the power of whole food supplements to positively impact their health. Most whole food supplements have a greenish color to them. This is because they are predominantly composed of green plant products. Green colored foods such as broccoli and spinach have great health benefits. Many whole food supplements are also labeled as ‘green drinks’.

They usually have a slightly bitter taste to them but many whole food supplement manufacturers are now adding all natural flavoring such as tangerine or raspberry so it tastes a whole lot better. Whole food supplements are considered by many to be superior to traditional supplements that are sold separately such as the container of vitamin C or the capsules of vitamin E that you would normally find in the stores. This is because many believe that our bodies respond to foods that are natural far better than foods that are produced synthetically. Many whole food supplement manufacturers also include organic natural ingredients in their products.

Taking a whole food supplement is a great idea for most people because their diets simply do not contain the nutrients necessary for good health so these whole food supplements can provide many of the missing nutrients. Some people actually do consume a lot of vegetables and fruits in their diet and may think that they do not need whole food supplements but in most cases they still do. This is because you simply cannot consume enough raw foods to cover all the nutrients your body really needs. There is so much water in raw foods such as tomatoes and apples that you would get full extremely quickly before you could eat the necessary amounts.  Whole food supplements are concentrated so it takes only a small amount, usually about 3 teaspoons if it is in powder form, a day so it is very easy to add to your existing diet.

As I’ve said, whole food supplements are usually green in color and this is great because the high levels of green foods have many benefits to your health.  Green foods are alkaline and there is a lot of research showing that most people’s bodies are acidic. This is due to host of factors and whole food supplements help to neutralize our bodies and allow us to retain balance.  This balance that whole food supplements can give you is critical, because there is a great deal of research showing that acidic environments in our bodies tend to encourage the growth of microorganisms which can lead to illness and disease.

You can get whole food supplements in many different forms. They can come as powders, capsules or tablets. I tend to favor the powdered form, but that is just a personal preference. I think nutritionally there is no real difference whether you choose to take your whole food supplements as a powder, tablet or capsule. Here is an example of what a whole food supplements ingredients section looks like:

  • Antioxidant rich fruits and berries such as apple pectin, raspberry extract
  • Alfalfa, Acerola berry juice, nova scotia dulse, siberian ginseng root
  • Japanese green tea leaf, milk thistle seed extract, astragalus root extract, red beet juice powder, bee pollen, full spectrum grape seed extract, aloe vera gel
  • Blue-green algae, wheat grass, dried tomato, carrot, beets, radish etc

Also you need to read the ingredients when choosing a whole food supplement because you want to make sure it is 100% natural. Sometimes you will find other isolated vitamins and minerals added in. Try to avoid those kinds of whole food supplements. The ingredients should be all natural foods such as vegetables, grains, roots, seed extracts, and fruit extracts.  It is not a whole food supplement if synthetic or isolated vitamins and minerals are added in.

Whole food supplements such as green drinks can be found at many places. Nowadays you can even get them at your local supermarket, check the pharmacy section. You can even get them at many online stores and definitely at any health food stores in your area. Now, remember that just because you are taking a whole food supplement does not give you a license to eat whatever you want and not bother with exercise. Always watch the quality and quantity of foods you are consuming and stay active. I always suggest sticking with natural foods and minimizing your intake of processed food. It’s difficult but not impossible and it has been done by many and it can be done by you.

Whole food supplements are truly a ‘superfood’ and have numerous benefits. Scientists are just beginning now to discover the benefits of whole food supplements and you owe it to yourself to try them and experience the health benefits that thousands are now enjoying.
